Volunteers

Got a couple of hours free at DjangoCon? Let us know you'd like to volunteer by signing up for our mailing list or grabbing a volunteer slot at the conference! DjangoCon is organized and run by volunteers from the Django community.

Before the conference

We need people to help review talks and tutorials, help us get the word out on social media about announcements and opportunities, and make our website even better. The best part? You don’t need to be registered for the conference to help!

If you’d like to help review talks or improve our social media presence, fill out this form! We’ll be in touch to get you set up.

Want to work on the website? Head over to the GitHub repo, take a look at the open issues, and submit a pull request!

At the conference

This year we’re looking for over 80 on-site volunteer hours to help make sure everything runs smoothly. Everyone who is attending DjangoCon is welcome to volunteer, but you must be registered to volunteer if you want to help on-site at the conference! All help is very much appreciated! Thank you! We truly couldn’t do this without you.

We need session runners, session chairs, volunteers to run the registration desk, and helpers to stuff swag bags! Does this sound like something you’d love to do?Sign up to volunteer here and have a lot at our volunteer handbook!

Session Chairs and Runners

Session Chairs and Session Runners are present for an entire session (usually 2-3 talks in a row).

As a Session Chair (see the volunteer handbook), you are the moderator of the session. You should arrive in the speaker room 10 minutes before the session starts. Meet your speaker and find out 1) if they are taking questions or not and 2) find out how they want you to count down time (10min warning, then 5, or some other way). Introduce the speaker to the audience (keeping it simple — their name, where they are from, and the talk title). During the talk, watch the clock and let the speaker know when it’s time to stop for questions. Mediate questions (if any), letting speaker & attendees know when it’s time to wrap it all up. After that, help the speaker disconnect the microphone equipment and make any last announcements (open spaces, etc).

As a Session Runner (see the volunteer handbook), you are the shepherd in the room. Your job starts in the Green Room fifteen minutes before each talk, where you'll meet the speaker and help them get ready by testing their laptop and briefing them on what to expect. Five minutes before their talk, you'll lead the speaker to their session room and help them get their laptop set up. You'll hand the speaker off to the chair, then your job is done until 15 minutes before the next talk!

Registration Desk

This is the perfect way to meet people! You welcome them, give them their name badge, and direct them to the coffee station and keynote room. Registration desk shifts are only one hour, and you’re welcome to work more than one shift. If this is your first DjangoCon, it’s a good way to get into volunteering!

Swag Bag Stuffing

Just show up! Many hands make light work! We’ll post the date and time closer to the week of the conference.

Sprints

Sign up to be a sprints mentor or general volunteer at the DjangoCon sprints! As a mentor, you'll help first-time sprinters get their environments set up, answer their questions, help them debug, and pair them with projects they're interested in working on. As a general volunteer, you'll help with whatever is needed!
